PV system :: clearing snow

1.29.2011 – Saturday

How to clean snow from solar panel:

The tool being used for this task is nothing more than a roof rake (aluminum) repurposed to gently brush snow from solar panels. To prepare the rake for this task, hot water pipe insulation was added to all four sides of the rake, the supports, and the pole (pretty much anything that was metal and could touch the face of a panel) and was secured using zip ties. Since the end of the roof rake is a large flat panel of aluminum, holes were drilled near the edges of the panel to facilitate foam attachment via zip ties. The intent of this modified roof rake is to get the bulk of the snow off the panels. On a clear day the remaining dusting on the panels will then be melted relatively quickly by the sun.
